Knights of the Old Republic takes place roughly 4000 years before The Phantom Menace, which I love because it immediately frees us from the shackles of the Skywalker saga, Clone Wars, conveniently resurrecting Ian McDiarmids, etc. The universe of Star Wars has always been more interesting than what the films insist on showing, and it's those uncharted corners of the mythology that Knights of the Old Republic seeks to explore.
These are stories with endless potential set "a long time ago in a galaxy far far away" yet they all seem to revolve around the same handful of characters, locations, and factions dealing with the same handful of themes and tropes. One of my biggest gripes with the Star Wars films is how much they insist on shrinking their own universe.
